Alfie is a lovely boy who is full of energy and enjoys having regular exercise. He's a real character, stunning to look at, he has genuine presence and would do well in the show ring, or could happily compete in most disciplines. He hunted full time for 13 years, so he's very experienced. I'm only putting him up for loan as I'm struggling with chronic health problems and can't ride him at the moment.

  • Most suitable home and loanee/owner/sharer

Alfie needs a quiet, confident rider to get the best out of him. He's not suitable for novices or nervous riders as he is a big, strong, forward-going horse. He doesn't have any vices out riding, but he can be a bit of a scaredy cat, so needs someone he can take confidence from. The ideal loanee would have plenty of experience with warmbloods or Irish Sports Horses, and preferably have been competing and/or hunting regularly. They would also need to be able to exercise him regularly.

  • Details of the tack used to ride the horse

Alf has a GP saddle, running martingale (he doesn't really need one though), and a simple snaffle bridle. I use a D ring roller snaffle.

Relevant health or lameness issues

Touch wood Alf's got no health issues or lameness problems. He is starting to stiffen up a bit in his hocks, but this is very mild and regular exercise would do him a world of good.

Veterinary examinations or treatment given in the past 12 months

Alf hasn't needed any vet treatment apart from routine teeth and jabs since I've owned him.

Please describe your horses behaviour in traffic

We have private woods to ride in where Alf is stabled, so apart from one small no-through road, I've never ridden him in traffic. He's been fine with cars, trucks, bikes etc., and his previous owner regularly rode him on the roads, but she did say he doesn't like tractors.

Please describe your horses behaviour when hacking out alone and in company

Alf is happy to go out alone or in company, it makes no difference to his behaviour. When I was still riding, I'd ride him and lead my Welsh Cob, and he was always as good as gold. When he first heads out on his own he might pretend it's too scary, but he just needs pushing on.

Details of any individual behavioural traits which may influence the type of person best suited to take on the horse

Alf is a big horse, and although he's not stupid, he does forget you're there sometimes, so you have to watch what he's doing! His main problem is separation anxiety, he really can't bear not being able to see other horses (unless you're riding him, then it magically disappears!). He would need company at all times, not necessarily close contact with another horse, but being able to see them. If he can't see another horse he will panic, and try to find one. He's not fussy about what sort of equine it is!

Details of the activities that the horse must not participate in due to previous injury

There's no restriction on what Alf could do because of previous injury. The only proviso is that he is 20 years old, so a full day's hunting might be a bit too much to expect!

Explanation whether this horse is simply a good doer or whether he is prone to laminitis

He will put on weight in spring on good grass if he's not working.

Details of any problems when being ridden

Alf doesn't nap, and has never bucked or reared with me, his only issue is a tendency to be a bit spooky when he's feeling fresh.I'm an experienced rider and used to work as a groom, so I find him a joy to ride, and it's a source of endless frustration that I'm not able to get out on him any more.
