DJ is a lovely natured horse who is easy to handle on the ground and is currently looked after by a 13 year old. He is well-behaved for the blacksmith and vet and loads first time. DJ loves attention and a good 'snuggle' as he is a big softy. He is currently living out but is stabled on a night in winter. Being a warmblood Dj likes his routine and is best suited to a yard that can offer him this. Dj does not like to be left alone in the paddock but is ok if he can see other horses.

  • Most suitable home and loanee/owner/sharer

DJ would suit someone who is wanting to hack and do schooling work. Due to arthritis, DJ is no longer able to jump so would suit someone who is wanting to mainly hack and do schooling work. This year DJ has been out doing unaffiliated dressage again and completed by myself and a 12 year old. He does not need to be ridden every day and is currently being ridden 2 - 3 times a week. For an experienced rider Dj is very easy to ride but being a warmblood he will try it on with less able riders.

  • Details of the tack used to ride the horse

DJ is always ridden in a snaffle bit and flash nose band and a GP saddle.

Relevant health or lameness issues

DJ has arthritis in his left coffin joint and last year had time out due to a lower pastern joint injury. He has a heart murmur, however this has not affected his ridden work (heart was last checked April 2018). Although Dj is fine to be ridden after being left for a few weeks, it is best that he is ridden regularly even if it is in light work (due to arthritis).

Veterinary examinations or treatment given in the past 12 months

DJ previously was injected for his arthritis, but it this is now managed by supplements and bute. His last heart check was April 2018 and reports are available to view. This was a routine check to ensure there were not any changes. Dj was given the all clear to continue ridden work as there were no significant changes.

Please describe your horses behaviour in traffic

DJ is used to light traffic and is fine with this. He has no experience of heavy traffic and would not be suitable to ride out on busy roads. DJ can be nervous with big vehicles but takes confidence from his rider. He does not do anything serious / dangerous he will just back off.

Please describe your horses behaviour when hacking out alone and in company

DJ is great to hack out in company and will go in the lead or behind. He is a little more nervous when alone and can nap, although he does nothing serious (just goes backwards). I am currently taking DJ out on his own every week and he is getting much better, he is just out of practise. This is the only reason that I have advertised Dj for an experienced rider as due to his size this could unnerve a less experienced rider. Dj is super safe in open spaces including stubble fields and has never bolted.

Details of any individual behavioural traits which may influence the type of person best suited to take on the horse

DJ can occasionally nap but takes confidence from his rider and soon moves on. With an experienced rider Dj is a very easy ride, however being a warmblood he soon ‘works out’ his rider and behaves accordingly. Dj is the sort who needs a lot of leg in the school.

Details of the activities that the horse must not participate in due to previous injury

Due to arthritis, DJ must no longer be jumped.

Details of any problems when being ridden

DJ can nap which involves him going backwards. He does not rear or do anything serious. He responds well to a quiet but assertive rider who perists on him moving forward and then he soon gives up and gets in with it. Being a warmblood if he gets away with anything he remembers and continues with the negative behaviour.
